Who is the Valley MVP?
Who are your picks for Valley MVP?
Here we go. Let’s hear it. Who are your picks for Utah Valley MVP?
Let me make the case for a few players.
Orem's Nate Adamson - Ask yourself where would this team be without his pitching? His numbers are amazing especially when you consider he pitches at the Ken Price Park of Utah Valley.
Mountain View's Mark Garrett - I realize you could make a case for other Bruin players, but he hits for power and average.
Springville's Ben Doxey - His average is now about .540 with 3 home runs and about 39 RBI.
Timpanogos' Gentry Croft - Lone Peak did get to him, but overall he's been the Valley's top pitcher.
Timpanogos' Bret Lopez - Can he repeat as MVP? Remember, pitchers have been very careful with him this year.
Spanish Fork's Adam Duke - You could take your pick of pitchers, but he is throwing better than any of them.
Spanish Fork's Tyler Hanks - He has the top average in the valley and four triples. He has been phenomenal.
Lone Peak's Adam Kelsch - Honestly, I don't know who to pick off this team. Someone on this team needs to be considered.
Those would be my top picks for now.
Put your vote in the poll.

What about Sechrist at Lone Peak? How have his numbers been?
And Dale Murphy's son at AF? Numbers?
Kallnki at Orem? Numbers? Like Lopez, he gets pitched around.
Whatcott at Springville - 2 no-no's......
Are these guys just all-valley types or..........?
Haven't seen enough games myself! The SF pitchers are really impressive! How about PG yesterday tho, incredible effort.

Ben Daniel could be Timpview's MVP, but no way could he be the the MVP for Utah Valley.

MVP
It's hard to measure the intangibles. Another candidate for MVP from Mtn. View would have to be Sam Roden. This guy can do it all. He also hits for power and for average. He's not a division 1 pitcher, but has been forced to take the bump and I think he's 5-0. He can play anywhere on the field, and has power to all fences. They've used him behind the dish, at third, short, and first base. Great utility skills. He's a leader, and in Coach Cooper's words, a "Bull Dog" as a competitor. Solid in in every facet. Great vote for MVP.

Re: Who are your picks for Valley MVP?
so only players on teams who have chances at a region title are allowed to be considered for MVP? thats just wrong zuke. payson's tyson memmott is having a big season too. how many strikeouts does he have so far? im betting at least 75. that kid is unhittable. AND not to mention provo. rigby? isom? ventura?
i bet if those kids were on winning teams, you would have different opinions about them
quit loving SF and timp and check out some other talent in the valley. it is ok to do that you know.

Re: Who are your picks for Valley MVP?
Responding to the last couple of posts:
Sam Roden is a stud. His pitching as well as hitting would probably make him MV's team MVP, though Mark Garrett is very good and has been on a tear of late. As for the valley, could be considered as well. MVP is a difficult choice for sure!
Now, as for the comment about MVP not coming from a winner, that is NOT just wrong. 99.9% of the time in all sports at all levels MVP's come from highly competitive teams. One of the criteria that a voter looks for is whether the MVP is able to use his skills to take his team to its highest level and compete for championships.
I agree that the kids mentioned in other posts from Provo, Payson, Timpview etc. are all good players. They will get due consideration when voting is done for all-valley, all-region, all-state type teams. That's how that system works!

Valley MVP
There are alot of good players in the valley and everyone has an opinion, but no one has the stats like Orem's Nate Adamson. Through May 1st he has a 9-1 record, 2.47 ERA, 46 S/O, with 18 walks. This kid deserves some serious consideration.

mvp
the mvp should only be given to the player that deserves it. not on " name " what they should or could have done or did last year. not even on the winning team. it should be the one with the highest stats all across the board. pitcher, player, batting whatever. thats the hang up we get into in this county. there are the chosen few that can make no mistakes whatever may happen in a game. just like it states " MVP"
who is the one that chooses this title anyway??? coaches , stats given to by coaches which at some point are
not always right. even in the paper they are sometimes wrong
winning team or not there are alot of MVP's out there i hope it goes to the one who is deserving
all year....not just in playoffs ( that shows a real mvp)

Re: Who are your picks for Valley MVP?
I'm just wondering...who selects the MVP, all-region, all-state, etc.?
Do the coaches get together and vote, or is there some kind of panel or what?

Re: Who are your picks for Valley MVP?
I'm happy to see some discussion about MVP. What makes it so tough is everyone has a different way to measure MVP.
One way I measure MVP is to look at how a team would be without that player. Ben Daniel is a good player, but where would Timpview be without him?
Still in last place.
Now ask yourself where would Orem be without Nate Adamson and where would Mountain View be without Sam Roden?
Those are just two examples.
The comment about me only loving the Spanish Fork's is not fair or accurate. No one goes out of their way to give everyone coverage more than me. I'm always looking to give those kids like Memmott more exposure, but I don't decide what games the paper covers.
For example, I have been high on Brad Rigby all year and have said so in the paper.
Now more about MVP.
I believe you look at the top teams first for your MVP. The object is to win. I also consider heavily how well the player performs in the biggest games of the year and the playoffs.
When the Daily Herald picks a Valley Player of the Year, or MVP, it is decided by our sports staff, not the coaches.
It is simply our opinion.
The coaches decide the All-Region teams.
This year it will be very difficult to pick an MVP, and hopefully you all will understand that.

more mvp
Adamson has certainly given Orem the chance to compete; but it isn't exactly because he's been "lights out." He gave up eleven hits to Springville and got hit hard against MV (both W's). Without the stellar defense behind him and timely offense, he's in the L column.
so, "how is the team without [a particular] player?" Kallunki has gotten the big hit all season. Sargent has made the big play at the toughest position. You take those guys out of the lineup and Adamson isn't 9-1 (not to mention the other timely team contributions). However, if you replace pitchers only (and keep Kallunki/Sargent in the lineup) the Tigers are suddenly 4-6. So, the MVP has to go to Adamson ... he's made the biggest impact.
But in a team game, it's often tough to pick an MVP. If Orem goes deep, it's because EVERYONE contributed. If they rely on just one guy ... it will be a short trip into the playoffs.

Well said. In my mind it is too close to call. That's why the state tournament will be the deciding factor.

MVP follow-up
You make some good points Drew. Let's dig a little deeper. Here's an example that has happened many, many times this season for the Orem Tigers: Adamson gave up 11 hits at Springville - but he had only 2 walks. Brian Whatcott (UVU signee) from Springville only gave up 6 hits to Orem BUT HE WALKED 9! Result - Orem wins. Adamson doesn't overpower anyone but he doesn't make many mistakes, and with a good defense behind him scooping up the ground balls that is why Orem is leading Region 7. There isn't a single player in the valley at any position who can be considered a dominant player. As you said it's a team game.

it should be a little more that what happens at state. the mvp could be out early because of his team but
help the best player would be the one with " a consistant year" not just great in the playoffs , region play or
the stat tour, i dont think that it is fair to say we have to wait until the state playoffs. i would hope that it is a seasons worth of stats. not just one or two good games for the championship.
