Orem, Mountain View

Post  Neil Warner on Sat Apr 26, 2008 4:35 am

I'm interested to hear some comments on the Orem/Mountain View game, the second classic between these two teams.
Orem, the surprise team of Region 7, continued to amaze. What a comeback by the Tigers. I thought Caleb Loveland threw a great game and Mountain View hit Nate Adamson as well as anyone all year. Mark Garrett is a hitter to be feared, but Orem responded with a memorable effort after a forgetful performance against Provo.
Sophomore Harrison Gray, hitting two bombs. If Orem ever gets everyone hitting at the same time, this team could be the state tournament darkhorse.

It was a great game; what high school baseball is all about. I'm surprised the DH gave it such little coverage (a route over Timpview gets the headlines?).
I also don't understand why Orem is the surprise team. The return 8 seniors; with the best 6-4-3 combo in the valley (if not state). 5 players are flirting with playing at the next level. They have fielding, hitting and pitching - if they can get 'em all on the same day, they will be tough (especially with help from underclassmen in Gray and Hamblin).
Mountain View has only hitting - little pitching and poor defense. They just won't go deep (or at all) with one of three; but they can mash it.
Provo knows how to win and have confidence. Their state run last year gave them plenty of confidence, but they don't have the sticks they had last year. Not sure what happened to Orem against Provo. Maybe first game back after springbreak and a bye in freezing conditions. It's not like Provo whipped 'em - Orem had plenty of opportunities to win, but ran themselves off the bases and then stranded at least 15.
Despite Springville's poor pitching the past couple games, Doxey is the real deal and I look for them to improve.
Should be fun .....

Question for Chinmusic

Orem has the best 6-4-3 in the state? Who are the 6 the 4 and the 3?

Jordan Sargent at short, Jordan Johnston at second, and Goose Kallunki at first. I would also have to agree with this comment. They are all very solid defensively.

Orem, Mountain View

The backbreaker for MV was Orem's Harrison Gray sending Sam Roden's pitch over the fence for a grand slam. The "fat lady" from MV next to me started singing...OK... I mean crying...

Fat Lady?

Well, let's see. . . Orem is 1-8 against Mtn. View the past three years. Including being blown out all during the summer league. Hmmmm, one win does not constitute much singing or rejoicing, albeit against a rival, and some luck. Truth is, when Roden takes the mound in a starting role, the O in Orem is O fer. Check the stats. He's not a reliever, and not even a Div. I pitcher, but seems to find a way to tame the Tigers. In fact, he's undefeated in region play.

A big game by one individual does not make up a great season. Orem has held serve. They are deeper in pitching than MV. MV has to rely on offense, which is a huge advantage on the Mountain View side. Congrats though to a great swing by a avg player in a cracker jack ball park. Mtn. View loves to play @ Orem. Most pop flies find the colored in diamond on the score book. As a matter of fact the only HR for one of Mtn. View's bottom third hitters came at Orem. Good for the home team and good for the visitors. Great confidence builder.

I do hope these two teams meet again this year. Both have some sleepy talent, and when it all comes together anything can happen. Mountain View wins 9 out of 10 games at either ball park.

See it hit it????

I have to make a comment, though not well informed on some of the records etc. that are professed in your post. I just took offense to the spirit of the post. Sounds more like a HS kid.....

Let's see, have you ever heard the phrase you're only as good as your last game. And talking about summer league games? Who knows what guys were missing and who played etc. in games like that. The fact is that MV beat Orem 10-9 in in St. George and according to the box score I just read in the Dnews it was in the last inning that they came back and won it. Then MV was the benificiary of controversial officiating (according to this site) and won 2-1 at home, who knows the mystery call probably didn't really cost he game I didn't see it, but it was still a one run game.

Here are the facts. Roden is a nice pitcher and does a great job. Garrett is a very good outfielder and outstanding hitter. Draper is good, having a bit of an off year from what I have heard. The rest of the MV starters are pretty average, but as a whole are better hitters than Orems complimentary guys, mostly because most learned and have been toutored by Gustin. Orem has some talent, not as much mind you as MV, but Adamson has really come on and Kallunki is a big kid that can play. This is my assesment from LP playing both teams (we actually lost to Orem) and from seeing them both play Timpanogos and reading the Dnews and Herald.

Basically, get off your high horse and tip your hat to your opponent. Don't whine and pull out "we beat you last time" rhetoric that makes you sound like a sore loser. And calling a young kid who makes clutch plays in a big game a "lucky player" makes you sound like a 7th grader.

Kudos Rocket! You hit the nail on the head. I think "See it Hit it" must be auditioning for High School Musical. Summer league? Pretty soon he will be pulling out 1996 T-Ball stats for the MV players.

Wow! apologies are in order to Yoda and Rocket for the offense taken. Not intended. Not even from a 7th grader. With my memory I can't even remember the T ball days, so there's no need to worry about reaching that far back. . High school musical? now that one stung. Sure sorry to see the Orem loss yesterday, great guys on that team that have battled for respect all year. Hats off to Goose, Cujo, Sarg and Colton. Good luck in the playoffs. Love to see a Utah County team represented.

Seeithit: Gotta give it to ya. Most would hide behind annonymity and tell us to go fly a kite. You chose humility. Nicely done. Wasn't trying to be a name caller myself (kinda 4th gradish). And now looking at it you probably wrote your passage when you were still a bit stung by a loss. Losing does suck! Payson came up big though and MV took care of business! Great season, now represent for the valley at state.

Welcome back to earth, Seeithitit. Glad to have you back with both feet planted firmly. Now let's have everyone in Region 7 show the rest of the state the high quality baseball we play here in Utah County.
